Philip Rothman’s compositions have been performed by the Utah Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, Maryland Symphony, National Philharmonic of Lithuania, Juilliard Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony, United States Military Academy Band, and numerous other ensembles.

Rothman’s music has been heard at major venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and it has been broadcast on over 200 radio stations in America on NPR’s Performance Today, on the radio program Indianapolis on-the-Air, and the McGraw Hill Companies’ Young Artists Showcase. Rothman was nominated for a New York Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Sound Design for Tongue in Cheek Theater’s theatrical production of Proof, and his work includes orchestrations for major feature films such as The Nanny Diaries, Hollywoodland (Focus Features), Won’t Back Down (20th Century Fox), Ray Donovan (Showtime), Phil Spector, Too Big to Fail, Taking Chance, Teddy in His Own Words, You Don’t Know Jack (HBO Films), and Faces of America (PBS).

Philip Rothman was a two-time participant in the Music Alive program as Composer-in-Residence with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and with the Green Bay Symphony. Music Alive is a national residency pro-gram of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA.

Rothman’s endeavors have earned him numerous honors including four ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, a Renée B. Fisher Foundation Award, the Brian M. Israel Prize, a fellow-ship from the League of American Orchestras, a New Music USA grant, and annual ASCAP Plus Awards since 1998.

The Buffalo News described Rothman’s Overture for Our City as “full of pizzazz… [with] attractive lyrical themes…I would rather hear this piece again than many other staple overtures,” and described Arc of Visibility as having “lush, almost Puccinian beauty… glimmering, shimmering moonlight reverie… very appealing music.” The Eugene (OR) Register-Guard said that Morningside Run had “lots of rhythmic energy and complexity…I found the piece highly entertaining and enjoyable.” The Boulder (CO) Daily Camera called Rothman’s The Manhattan Chase an “enchanting work that was warmly received by the audience.” The Green Bay (WI) Press Gazette said of Arc of Visibility, “Rothman’s appearance on stage brought a standing ovation for him and his atmospheric work.”

Through his company NYC Music Services, Rothman provides music preparation services to professional composers, publishers, and institutions. Clients include Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Opera, NFL Films, Indianapolis Symphony/Symphonic Pops Consortium, and European American Music Corporation, and he runs the music notation and technology blog Scoring Notes.

Rothman is in demand as a consultant and lecturer, currently serving as program advisor to The Aaron Copland Fund for Music. He was the creative advisor and project director for Ford Made in America, a 60-orchestra commissioning consortium and education program sponsored by Ford Motor Company Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts. He travels frequently to give music training and technology workshops.

Philip Rothman holds a Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude from Rice University and a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where he was awarded a full scholarship. His teachers in composition have included Samuel Adler, Edward Applebaum, Samuel Jones, Richard Lavenda and Stephen Shewan. He lives in New York City.
